(45 customer reviews)

Koa Hawaiian island chain sculptures of the 8 major Hawaiian islands.

Finely crafted from hand selected Koa wood that’s grown on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Every island, board, and Koa tree has a different story to tell.

Wood is a natural material and can vary in tone, color, grain, and density — as one can note throughout the website’s photos of Koa Wood Hawaiian Island Chains.

Each Hawaiian Island Chain includes a hanging template, hardware (drywall & wood walls), and straightforward instructions–for the best experience possible.

Description

The Hawaiian Island Chain is an iconic symbol that one is bound to see if they have ever visited the state of Hawaii. Why settle for a flat map of Hawaii when you can capture the topography of the Aina with a Koa sculpture that’s the impetuous of Hawaiian Decor?  A few have made pieces of Hawaiian island wall art that resemble the island chain, but none to my knowledge has reached the level of detail, quality, and affordability that is sold here.

  • My pieces are carved from Koa wood that’s grown on the Big Island of Hawaii and hand selected for the best artwork possible.
  • A satin lacquer and a burnished oil finish are offered; the first has a more traditional finish surface with some depth, and the other has reduced shine with less finish “build”.
  • Each island is sanded meticulously, receives several coats of lacquer, is buffed between coats, and finally has a satin lacquer top coat applied.
  • In the case of the “Burnished Oil” finish the islands are sanded to a high grit, recieve a hand rubbed oil finish, are burnished, and recieve a final hand rubbed coat.
  • Lacquer is a more durable finish in the way of humidity, and even offers brief resistance to water exposure.
  • The burnished oil finish will have less shine, potentially appear more natural, and will not fully seal the wood–it should be kept in a stable environment, and not handled extensively by hand.

Every set includes all the Hawaiian islands : Hawaii’i, Maui, O’ahu, Kauai, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Ni’iau, and Kahoʻolawe.

  • 24″ Island Chain (Miniature) Size: 24″x12″ (61×30.5cm)
    Big Island Span: 5.6” (14.2cm)
  • 36″ Island Chain Size: 36″X20″ (91.5x51cm)
    Big Island Span: 8.75″ (22.2cm)
  • 45″ Island Chain Size: 45″X24″ (114x61cm)
    Big Island Span: 10.75″ (27.3cm)

“Island Chain Size” is the size of the entire island chain in length and width.
If you were to take a Hawai’i state map with tight margins, unroll it, and hang it on your wall–that would be the size of your Hawaii wall art.

“Big Island Span” is the size of the Big Island.
If you took a tape measure to the Big Island this would be the greatest measurement you could find.

Every Hawaiian island chain includes hanging hardware, a template, and written instructions.  They are easily hung with typical screws or nails, and the islands will hang flush against your walls.  If a picture can be hung on your wall than an entire island chain can easily be hung on any wood or drywall.

Wood island chains should be hung indoors and out of direct sunlight;
away from excessive humidity or extremely variable temperatures.

If desired hanging template(s) can be ordered for sizing purposes which includes hanging hardware, instructions, and the selected size(s) chosen.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions such as details about the artwork, sizing, application,  a specific delivery window, etc.

    Stunning! Can’t wait to hang.

Bought the 24-inch, Koa island chain. Josh worked with me to find me the right piece of Koa for my taste and kept me apprised throughout the process, through delivery. The detail on the larger islands is fantastic. While the small islands are a lot tinier than I envisioned, this is due entirely to my inability to conceptualize size. Installation is a breeze thanks to the fabulous template and clear instructions. Putting it up was fun! Tip: Utilizing the template as a guide, we attached the islands to the wall with painter’s tape before pounding in the nails, just to make sure we knew what it would look like when done. Took a couple of tries to get the right placement. Once on the wall, everything looked great, and we absolutely love the piece. I am moving on to ordering a large version of Maui for a different room.

I’m a pretty handy guy and expected the install to be a bit of a hassle but happily I was wrong. It only took a couple minutes. My wife is from Oahu and I got them for Christmas for her. They are beautiful and she loves them.

  4. N

really great picture and very easy to assemble. The contact to the seller was also great and it arrived on time. thanks Josh for that.

  5. M

Mahalo nui loa for the island chain. I received it just now and it’s beautiful!!! We love it!

  6. C

This wall art is amazing! I love seeing the detail. My wife and I visited Hawai’i for the first time in November. We went to 4 islands and saw many sights including Waimea Canyon on Kauai, Haleakala on Maui, Kilauea on The Big Island and Diamond Head on Oahu. All are beautifully recreated in stunning detail in unique Hawaiian Koa wood. I can see and feel these sites and many more. This is a great memento of out trip and we will treasure it forever.

  7. M

Your work is so nice and I liked it very much.

Thanks to that, there is no other nice studio like this one in Japan

  8. K

Though we are not able to go…..the islands are on our wall in such majestic beauty. Your talent and love you put into your creations is appreciated every time I walk by where they are hung. Mahalo!!!!

  9. T

Absolutely love our new set of islands! These came super quick. The installation instructions and map template made it super easy to get up in the wall with the perfect spacing and orientation. The m]use of rare earth magnets to keep the islands in place is brilliant. The detail and finish are outstanding. And, top-notch quality. We love everything about this product!

  10. S

I highly recommend the Koa Hawaiian Island chain. I purchased my Island chain from Joshua directly and he took time to explain and show me the process of making the Islands. Mine proudly hangs in my living room when I am on the Big Island and easily can be taken for storage when I return to the Mainland. Mahalo!

  11. E

We are thrilled with the quality and appearance of this purchase. Well worth the wait! We absolutely love looking at the wall and thinking about our trips to Hawaii. Easy to hang using the optional template – however we chose to use 3M hangers as to not damage our walls. Will travel with us wherever we live. Mahalo from Pennsylvania!

  12. M

Excellent craftsmanship. Yes, product shipped on time and the packing protected the sculptures.

  13. S

It was everything I expected! They give you a great template to align your islands perfectly! It was a birthday gift for my husband who was born and raised in Hawaii and he LOVES it!

  14. Denise Leong-Brattain

    Beautifully crafted Koa wood piece!

  15. hilsykes

Hanging Locations and Care

Wood Hawaii Island Artwork

Wood should always be hung indoors and not exposed to excessive or long terms spans of high humidity or temperature fluctuations due to the hygroscopic nature of such a natural material. With lacquer finish maintenance is not required or suggested; moreover, a burnished oil finish shouldn’t be waxed or recoated.

Bonded Metal Finish Hawaii Island Artwork

Metal finish island chains should be kept under cover and away from salt spray–as the wax finish may degrade and allow the bonded metal surface to oxidize.

Wax Finish

Wax finish is long lasting and should require minimal to no maintenance if kept indoors away & away from salt spray or mist.

Lacquer Finish

A lacquer finish will degrade slower, however, it is best advised to keep the piece under cover, and out of the elements such as deeply within the recesses of a covered patio or Lani.

Industrial Catalyzed Finish

Designed by a renowned sculpture and metal finish company this finish is resistant to even salt spray.
This coating takes significant labor to apply, requires additional precautions, and will add 2-3 weeks to the lead time along with a 15% to 30% additional cost.
The finish is only offered on request and additional information is show below.

Please Specify the Application in the Order Notes!

Regardless of your finish choice the hanging hardware can be upgraded so it is more corrosion resistant.
Moreover, if you’re unsure of which finish to purchase please feel free to contact us anytime and you will recieve a prompt response.

(No guarantee is offered or implied if a set is hung outside, however, additional finish options, and a maintenance schedule is offered on request)

Can I hang your artwork outside under cover?

For an outdoor covered patio or Lani I would recommend a metal finish set as they are relatively inert and will better handle temperature & humidity compared to my wood artwork. Strong wind, constant direct sunlight, and salt spray are other considerations to take into account.
The islands have a resin core and a bonded metal finish on their faces & edges–the surface is sealed with either wax, lacquer, or an industrial catalyzed finish (on request) to prevent oxidization.
All considered the composite/bonded metal surface looks like metal since it’s mostly metal with a binder and therefore once the finish starts to degrade the surface may start to patina/oxidize
If you’re in an environment with no salt spray, relatively dry, and minimal sun/rain exposure then the wax finish should serve you well for a few years with the islands eventually requiring more wax.
However, if there’s some exposure or moisture then a lacquer finish is a consideration and would fair better.

What about salt spray or significant exposure?

In the case of significant exposure and/or salt spray a two part catalyzed finished is highly recommended.
The website shows pricing for both the wax finish and lacquer, however, due to the inherent difficulty in sourcing and applying the two part catalyzed finish there is an additional 15%-30% charge for this process.

How does wax compare to a lacquer or an industrial finish?

If you change from a wax finish to a film based finish it will result in a thicker coating–so more shine will result and the surface will look less “raw” in appearance.
