Description

Capture the beauty of the Aina and it’s topography with bonded copper sculptures of all the major 8 Hawaiian islands.  The islands are captured within the brilliance of a copper finish, given a thorough hand polishing, and finally a museum grade wax from the UK is applied.  Each Hawaiian island has a durable bonded layer of metal on the face, and edges–the benefits of a beautiful metal finish without the cost & weight of foundry cast artwork at under 10LB (4.5kg) for an entire 68″ set.

My island chains feature all the main Hawaiian Islands including Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe.

  • 24″ Island Chain Size: 24″x12″ (61×30.5cm)
    Big Island Span: 5.6” (14.2cm)
  • 36″ Island Chain Size: 36″X20″ (91.5x51cm)
    Big Island Span: 8.75″ (22.2cm)
  • 45″ Island Chain Size: 45″X24″ (114x61cm)
    Big Island Span: 10.75″ (27.3cm)
  • 68″ Island Chain Size: 68″x40″ (173x102cm)
    Big Island Span:18.2″ (46cm)

“Island Chain Size” is the size of the entire island chain in length and width.
If you were to take a Hawai’i state map with tight margins, unroll it, and hang it on your wall–that would be the size of your Hawaii wall art.

“Big Island Span” is the size of the Big Island.
If you took a tape measure to the Big Island this would be the greatest measurement you could find.

If desired hanging template(s) can be ordered for a modest amount for sizing purposes which includes hanging hardware, instructions, and the selected size(s) chosen.

The sculptures were made from a carved Koa Hawai’i island chain and feature similar detail.  They feature hand buffed museum grade wax finish on-top of the metal gel coat and are back-filled with a high strength urethane resin.  Pictured is the museum wax option, however, a lacquer specifically made for artwork is also offered for those who want such a finish.

Every Hawaiian island chain includes hanging hardware, a template, and written instructions.
They are easily hung with typical screws or nails, and the islands will hang flush against your walls.
If a picture can be hung on your wall than an entire island chain can easily be hung on any wood or drywall.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions and you will be responded to within 1-3 business days.

Metal Finish Process and Selection

Metal Finishes

Several options are offered for those who are interested in a modern yet time tested metal finish.
Such Hawaii Island Chains are created using modern materials which are manufactured in the USA and the end result is a bonded metal piece which boasts the benefits of a solid cast sculpture–without the weight, cost, or otherwise the burden of such an undertaking.
The surface is approximately 90% metal on the face and edges of the island; the backs of the islands are black, and an entire 68″ size island chain weighs under 12 pounds.

Metal finishes are in Copper, Bronze, Aluminum, & Iron–with additional available on request.

As with most artwork handmade there will be some variances in color, texture, and shine.

However, as one may notice there are numerous photos online of the island chains, and of course–the artist is more than willing to provide photos, and even material samples on request if desired.  Such variances result from the hand mixing of the composite material, the source of the raw materials, the amount of polishing each island receives, and how the patina is applied/removed if such an option is selected.

Patina

Patina

For those who want a darker set or with additional age or organic look black medal oxide patina is offered.
This is a hand finishing process where patina is applied and partially removed with a light abrasive, therefore, every set is unique, and to a degree be customized for one’s needs.  A photo below shows a bronze Big Island without and with a light-medium patina.

Wax or Lacquer Finish

Wax or Lacquer?

The final step is that the Hawaii Island Chain requires a coating to preserve the set and bring out the colors of the metal finish.

  • Museum wax features a gentle glow with a light shine and has minimal surface build.
  • The potential downside with wax is you have only one sheen and some want a smoother surface or other such adjustments of lacquer.
  • Lacquer (not shown online) is offered in additional sheen options such as matte, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss.
  • The potential downside is lacquer is a finish which adds build to the surface and some may find it adds a “plastic” feeling to the piece.
